Ending a week long confusion over the fate of over a lakh students, the Delhi University on Friday backed down, accepting UGC’s directive to roll back the controversial four year degree programme to three years.

A latest statement from the Delhi University Vice Chancellor says, "The University of Delhi recognises the need of the hour. It is of paramount importance to protect the interests of the students by ensuring the start of the admission process. In line with the directive of the UGC, the University has decided to roll back the FYUP."

"Consequently the admission process shall be conducted under the scheme of courses that were in force in the academic session 2012-13 in all the colleges of the University of Delhi. It is expected that the Principals of our colleges shall assist in devising and ensuring a speedy completion of the admission process,” the statement added.

Vidya Venkatraman, Executive Council Member, Delhi University Teachers Association, when contacted, said, “There is a possibility of the first cut-off list coming by Saturday and admission process starting from Sunday.”

The varsity on Thursday offered a blended proposal to UGC to retain the 4-year degree as optional for students inclined towards research, while reverting to the 3-year honours structure.

The UGC in response sent a letter on Thursday, which it published on its site on Friday, said that the contents of the proposal were contradictory. It added that the directive of the commission has been unambiguous that FYUP was introduced without statutory approvals.

“The UGC again exhorts the Delhi University to issue instructions to all colleges to commence the admission process to undergraduate courses immediately,” the letter added.
