In 2010-11, Bhilai Steel Plant achieved record production of 5.71 million tonnes (mt) of hot metal (a 6.3 per cent growth over 2009-10), 5.33 mt of crude steel (4.3 per cent) and 4.57 mt of saleable steel (4.3 per cent), according to a company release.

The loading of 4.53 mt of saleable steel, too, was the best ever, the release says. It might be noted that the previous best performance in the production of hot metal (5.39 mt), crude steel (5.18 mt), saleable steel (4.49 mt) and loading of saleable steel (4.43 mt) was recorded in 2008-09.

Value-added steel

A significant feature of the performance in 2010-11 was the increase in share of value-added special steel in total saleable steel production — from 62 per cent in 2009-10 to 64.5 per cent in 2010-11. The plant recorded its highest ever production of 2.95 mt of special steel and value-added products as against the previous best of 2.84 mt in 2008-09.

A record volume of 16.33 mt of total raw material was handled during the period by the BSP's ore-handling plant. With the stocks at existing captive iron ore mines in Dalli-Rajhara fast depleting, the revamping of some facilities and other measures were taken up on priority at Bhilai's iron ore complex during the year to meet the requirement of ore. Thus, the iron ore production at 7.7 mt, represented a growth of 4.2 per cent over 2009-10.

Best-ever loading

The Rail & Structural Mill, that completed 50 years in October last, recorded the best-ever loading of 2,32,555 tonnes of UTS-90 26-M Long Rails, surpassing the previous best of 2,31,470 tonnes in 2009-10. The Mill that fulfilled its commitment to Indian Railways for supply of corrosion resistant NCC grade of rails also exported over 9,660 tonnes of rails to Sri Lanka during the year.

The Merchant Mill recorded its best-ever production of 5,05,990 tonnes of its special grades of TMT bars, surpassing the previous best of 4,30,494 tonnes in 2008-09. The Wire Rod Mill recorded its best-ever performance with a total production of 6,59,500 tonnes of wire rods as against previous best of 6,59,484 tonnes in 2008-09.

In line with the product development strategy of developing one new product grade each month to meet customers' demand and to increase the market share, a total of 12 new products were developed and rolled in 2010-11, the release adds.
