Discovery Channel is set to add five new channels to its bouquet of offerings in India.
New channels
Discovery Kids, Investigation Discovery, Home and Health, 3D Net and Military channels are amongst the proposed channels that received the nod from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting recently.
It typically takes one-and-a-half to two years to launch a channel after receiving the licence and the company is looking at a similar time frame to air the new channels, said Mr Rahul Johri, Senior Vice-President and General Manager – South Asia, Discovery Networks Asia-Pacific.
“Our analysis says that as digitalisation grows, the variety of channels also increases in that market. India has just begun to witness a fabulous growth in digital technology and we want to be at the forefront of transforming the consumer experience,” said Mr Johri on the sidelines of the launch of a new television show – Oh my Gold! with Lisa Ray. The show, which travels to five cities of India and explores the gold traditions, will also be a comeback platform for actress Lisa Ray who is recovering from cancer.
The new channels to be launched by Discovery will target and cater to specific audience categories, said Mr Johri.
The digital landscape in India is growing and Discovery's hi-definition channel is picking up, he added.
