Bajaj Auto Ltd exported 1,30,573 units in May 2012, its highest export figures for the month of May, despite the fact that exports to a key market - Sri Lanka - were nil. It exported 1,26,818 units during May 2011.
But its motorcycle sales growth in May 2012 was just one per cent compared to the corresponding period in the previous year.
The company said it sold 3,21,922 motorcycles in May 2012 compared to 3,17,989 units in May 2011, a growth of a mere 1 per cent. The commercial vehicles segment registered a 26 per cent fall, with sales declining to 30,297 units compared to 40,860 units during May 2011. Overall sales fell by 2 per cent to 3,52,219 units compared to 3,58,849 units in May last year.
Bajaj Auto said exports to Sri Lanka were nil against a normal monthly average of 10,000 motorcycles and three-wheelers. The company said that it expected a recovery beginning July. But Bajaj Auto did not provide any reason for exports to Sri Lanka not taking place.
