The SREI Infra and India Power Corporation (IPC) controlled Dishergarh Power Supply Company (DPSC) may firm up plans for the proposed 2 X 270 MW thermal power project at Raghunathpur in the industrial region of Asansol West Bengal by June.

The cost of the 540-MW coal-based project is estimated to be Rs 2,970 crore.

According to Mr Hemant Kanoria, Chairman of DPSC, the company has already acquired 155 acres for the project. The residual 155 acres are expected to be available once Assembly election is completed in the State in May.

“We have recently secured possession over half of the requisite land. The rest of the last is expected to be handed over by the West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation after the election,” he said.

Though Mr Kanoria said that the project was in its initial stages of implementation, sources in BHEL said that the company has made sufficient progress in awarding the BTG (boiler-turbine-generator) contract.

DPSC is one of the oldest power distributors in the country. The company currently generates 40 MW of power and distributes approximately 125 MW in the 600 square km industrial areas of Asansol. The gap between own generation and supply was met through imports from Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC).

A consortium of SREI-IPC acquired a little over 57 per cent stake in the company in 2009 at approximately Rs 172 crore through an open bidding in the face of competition from private sector major CESC Ltd and others.

The Jyoti Kumar Poddar-controlled IPC has a total of 35 MW wind power generation capacity in Gujarat and Karnataka. The company is currently setting up 3 X 150 MW coal-based thermal power capacity in Haldia in coastal West Bengal through an SPV India Power Corporation (Haldia) Ltd.

BHEL is awarded the BTG contract for the Rs 2,475 crore project scheduled to be on stream beginning 2012.
