The XII Five Year plan is likely to lay special focus on energy efficiency targeting reduction of 12,000 mw, according to Dr Ajay Mathur, Director General of Bureau of Energy Efficiency.

Speaking at the 10th Energy Efficiency Summit 2011 organised by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Dr Mathur said that the Government proposes to target the reduction of 12,000 MW of Peak Power through initiatives which includes Perform, Achieve & Trade (PAT), Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC), Standard & Labelling and Super-efficient equipment programmes.

Dr Mathur said with increased demand in each sector, meeting the energy supply needs of all the sectors are a matter of great concern. To meet the energy needs, India has to increasingly depend on imports and the volatile international market conditions would have great impact on the economy of the country.

Mr A Chandra Sekhara Reddy, Member Secretary, Energy Co-ordination Cell, Energy Dept, Government of Andhra Pradesh, said in Andhra Pradesh, State Power Utilities, for the first time in history achieved a peak power demand of 11, 289 MW and a record peak energy supply of 265 MU per day during March this year.

He said Andhra Pradesh managed to bridge the gap between peak energy and demand deficit and clocked a percentage of 3.2 per cent (peak energy) and 6.3 per cent (demand deficit). Dr Naushad Forbes, Chairman, Energy Efficiency Summit 2011, said that the CII and Forbes Marshall will shortly come out with a strategy paper for high energy consumption process industries. Energy intensive sectors such as paper would be covered under the study.

Dr. Mathur said that the BEE will shortly come out with PAT (perform, achieve and trade) Scheme for high energy consumers.
