Mr Debashish Sen, principal secretary, Urban Development Department, West Bengal, on Wednesday said the State will not consider repealing the Urban Land (Ceiling and Regulation) Act, 1976 (ULCA).

The Act sets a land-ceiling limit in ‘A' category cities such as Kolkata and says that one cannot hold more than 500 square metres (or 7.5 cottah) of land.

“Perhaps, West Bengal is the only State to have retained the Act. But, land prices have gone up in the States where the Act has been repealed,” Mr Sen said at an interactive session on urbanisation in the State organised by MCC Chamber of Commerce and Industry here.

He, however, pointed out that the State was against the idea of tweaking the legislation of the Act. “We are exploring ways to optimise the benefits of the Act. When the opportune time comes, we will surely look into it,” Mr Sen added.
