Bengal allows Infosys to set up second campus

The West Bengal Government has cleared Infosys' plans for setting up its second campus in the satellite township of Rajarhat in West Bengal. The IT major, which cleared all pending dues to the State Government, is expected to take possession and start a survey of the land after Diwali.

Infosys' currently has one campus in the Sector V area of Salt Lake in Kolkata.

According to State Government officials, full payment – which is expected to be nearly Rs 75 crore - for around 50 acres has been made by Infosys to the West Bengal Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (HIDCO).

The IT major had made a token payment of nearly Rs 20 crore for purchasing the land in 2010.

“Infosys officials made full payment for the land after being satisfied with the infrastructure arrangements that have been set up there by the State Government,” Mr. Debasis Sen, Chairman, HIDCO, said.

“Land will be handed over once the company completes the survey,” Mr Sen said.

According to initial agreements, the State Government, through its development agency – HIDCO –will set up the required infrastructure that includes approach roads, providing sewerage and drainage connections and electricity connections.

During a meeting with the State IT Minister, Mr Partha Chatterjee, the Infosys co-founder, Mr Narayana Murthy, had assured the State Government of speedy construction once the required infrastructure was put in place.

“We hope Infosys will start work on its Rajarhat campus soon,” the State Labour Minister, Mr Purnendu Basu, said.
