Gross value added (GVA) of agriculture and allied sectors has surged more than three times during 2011-12 and 2023-24, a report by Statistics Ministry, released on Friday said.
‘Agriculture and allied activities’ sector contributes approximately 16 per cent of the country’s GDP for FY24 (PE) at current prices and supports about 46.1 per cent of the population. Not only does its performance directly impact food security, but also influences other sectors, sustaining livelihoods and supporting economic growth.
According to “Statistical report on value of output from agriculture and allied sectors,” GVA of agriculture and allied sectors registered a growth of about 22 per cent surging to over ₹4,800 thousand crore in Fiscal Year 2023-24 as against over ₹1,500 thousand crore in 2011-12. During this period, Gross Value of Output (GVO) from the sector grew to around ₹3,000 thousand crore from around ₹1,900 thousand crore, marking an overall increase of approximately 55 per cent.
Though the report has not mentioned the reasons for high growth, it is believed that better monsoon coupled with various government schemes helped farmers grow more and get better value for their produce. Crop sector remains the largest contributor to total GVO with share of over 54 per cent while cereals and fruits & vegetables together accounted for over 52 per cent.
Among the cereals, only paddy and wheat constitute approximately 85 per cent of GVO. Talking about States, the report noted while their share has come down, Uttar Pradesh is still on top with around 17 per cent share on total GVO of agriculture and allied sector. This State along with four other — Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Telangana and Haryana — give nearly 53 per cent output.
In the fruit group in 2023-24, GVO of banana (₹47 thousand crore) has surpassed that of mango (₹46.1 thousand crore). Mango was the top-most contributor in GVO in fruit group consistently from 2011-12 to 2021-22. Potato remains the top-most contributor in GVO (at constant prices) of vegetable group during 2011-12 to 2023-24. GVO of potato has increased to 37.2 thousand crore in 2023-24 from 21.3 thousand crore in 2011-12.
Floriculture experienced significant growth in GVO at constant prices, nearly doubling to ₹28.1 thousand crore in 2023–24 from ₹17.4 thousand crore in 2011–12, reflecting rising commercial interest and diversification in horticulture. GVO of livestock products has increased to ₹919 thousand crore in 2023-24 from ₹488 thousand crore in 2011-12, making it one of the fastest-growing components of agriculture & allied activities.
Milk remained dominant in this sector in 2023-24. However, its share has decreased to around 66 per cent from over 67 per cent. Meanwhile, share of meat group in total GVO of livestock sector increased to over 24 per cent in 2023-24 from 19.7 per cent in 2011-12.
