The Meghalaya Education Minister, Mr Ampareen Lyngdoh, was stranded on the highway for around ten hours as a nightmarish traffic jam on the NH-40 connecting Guwahati and Shillong.
Thousands of commuters were also trapped last evening, officials said. Some people travelling on the 100-km Guwahati-Shillong road took over 12 hours to reach their destination, while many were still stranded midway.
Official sources said the Deputy Commissioner of Ri Bhoi district conducted a mobile court and levied fines on overloaded trucks which led to the traffic jam.
