The Union Urban Development Ministry has approved the phase-I extension of Chennai Metro from Washermenpet to Wimco Nagar in North Chennai last week. The project has been sent to Public Investment Board for appraisal, said M Venkaiah Naidu, Union Minister for Urban Development.
Speaking to newspersons after meeting the Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa at the State Secretariat, Naidu said when she stressed on the early clearance of the 9.051 km project, "I told it has been approved by me a few days ago. I told her that I will take it up with the Finance Ministry for its early clearance," he said.
The Rs 3,000-crore project is partly underground from Washermenpet to Korukkupet and then continues as an elevated corridor up to Wimco Nagar.
