North East Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) plans to add 950 MW to its existing power generation capacity in the region in the next five years.
“We are already generating 1,130 MW in the region.
Seventy per cent houses are powered by NEEPCO. We shall add 950 MW by the next five years in the region. If we get new projects, we might give more,” NEEPCO Chief Managing Director P.C. Pankaj said.
NEEPCO plans to set up a project in Manipur for which preliminary talks have begun. Two hydroelectric projects at Arunachal Pradesh are also in the pipeline and there were projects in Mizoram as well, he said.
NEEPCO recently had also invited Expression of Interest (EoI) for joint ventures in Nagaland.
Pankaj said the 104-MW gas-based thermal power project at Monarchak in Sipahijala district of Tripura would start generation by July next year.
“The project would start generation by July 2013 and work is progressing properly for making the project operational,” he said.
Once the project becomes operational, NEEPCO would sell power at the rate of Rs 3.14 per unit.
NEEPCO is interested to invest more for power projects in Tripura if gas is available for setting up new power plants, he added.
