The Andhra Pradesh Government is contemplating an investment of around Rs 14, 000 crore in the next four years to strengthen the transmission and distribution infrastructure of the power sector.

As part of its five-point programme, the Energy Department plans to install one lakh DTRS (Distribution Transformers) every year to resolve the low voltage and failure of transformers during both kharif and rabi season.

The overall objective is to provide satisfactory power to over 32 crore consumers of all categories (domestic-181.54 lakh; agri-29.32 lakh and others 21.49 lakh).

Five-point programme

The energy department has decided to conduct a brain storming session of top officials of the power sector under the stewardship of Principal Secretary, Energy, Mr Dinesh Kumar, on August 16 to chalk out a strategy and sustainable programme for the effective implementation of the five-point programme — To improve power generation to bridge the gap between demand and supply, to strengthen the T&D network, reduce T&D losses, promote saving of energy in a big way, and finally re-focus on consumer initiatives.

The main objective of the Government is to provide satisfactory supply to all consumers. As part of proposed investment of Rs 6,000 crore on transmission projects, it is programmed to take up the following installations in the next four years. They are: 400 Kv substations (4), 220 kv (37), 132 kV (125), that totals up to 7,000 CKM (circuit kms) of EHT (extra high tension) lines all over the State.

Similarly, under the proposed distribution infrastructure programme (Rs 8,000 crore), it is proposed to add 365 numbers of 33/11 kv sub stations during current year of 2011-12.

AP Discoms have proposed to construct around 1,800 nos of 33/11 sub stations and erect over 4 lakh DTRs in the next four years, apart from laying of 33 and 11 kv lines.
