The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM), a dominant political organisation in the Darjeeling Hills, will meet the West Bengal Chief Minister, Ms Mamata Banerjee, today demanding an “honourable deal”.
The GJM has already rejected the high power committee report headed by Mr Justice Shyamal Sen.
The report had suggested the inclusion of five mouzas (three from from Darjeeling district and two from Dooars in the plains of Jalpaiguri district) against the demanded 398 mouzas by the GJM.
It has threatened a resurrection of the Gorkhaland agitation if the State Government went ahead and implemented the recommendations of the committee.
The party has been demanding the inclusion of additional mouzas in the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) — an autonomous body set up to look into the administration of the Darjeeling Hills region.
Separate statehood
Darjeeling Hills have been on the boils for the past few years following the demand of a separate statehood.
However, ethnic trouble started brewing in the region after the GJM sought the inclusion of supposed tribal dominated areas of the Dooars and Terai region.
According to sources, the GJM chief, Mr Bimal Gurung and the party secretary, Mr Roshan Giri, are expected to meet the Chief Minister. The meeting, originally scheduled on June 14 was deferred after Ms Banerjee left for Delhi on Tuesday evening.
