The Government is ready to spend whatever amount is needed for the Ganga Rejuvenation Programme, Union Minister for Water Resources Uma Bharti said here on Monday.
There won’t be any shortage of funds for the project, she added. Speaking on the sidelines of Ganga Manthan, a programme on the river, she said the Government will soon start a website on the Clean Ganga project.
“We will start a website in next three-four days to discuss the Clean Ganga project, wherein all stakeholders and public can participate by giving suggestions,” Uma Bharti told reporters here.
Not only the Ganga, the Government will also work on other rivers need to be cleaned, she added.
On the new policy around dams for Ganga and other rivers, Bharti said: “There are many new technologies which can be used and even the older dams could be maintained with these technologies. Without destroying any river, we have to work on betterment of any river, starting with the Ganga.”
Union Minister for Road Transport, Highways and Shipping Nitin Gadkari, who also present at the event, said the Government proposes to conduct dredging to provide a width of 45 metres and draft (depth) of 5 metres to enable navigation of small ships between Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh and Hooghly in West Bengal on Ganga in the first stage of its development.
