India has made significant advances in various fields such as science and technology and its economy too is growing at a rapid pace. However, the role of students is very important to realise every Indian's dream of taking the nation into the league of developed nations, said Mr A. Mahendra Raju, Additional Central Provident Fund Commissioner, here.

Delivering a lecture on “Role of students in shaping the future of India” organised by the BL Club and sponsored by Syndicate Bank for the students of Sri Venkateshwara College, he said that standing up against injustices and addressing the menace of corruption were the key factors in realising this dream.

Sharing his own experience, he said how as a student growing up in a town in Andhra Pradesh he stood up against official apathy and injustice. When he was in college, he wrote a letter to the higher officials of the State Road Transport Corporation explaining the attitude of a bus conductor who was in the habit of not giving the tickets to the commuters and pocketing the money. He said he felt happy when the officials took prompt action against the guilty conductor. “Official apathy and corruption are hindering the growth of this nation. As long as there are bribe-givers, there will be bribe-takers. The time is perhaps appropriate for you to be firm against such issues. There is a compelling need to create such citizens who are willing to raise their voice against such issues and bring in changes,” Mr Raju said.

During the question and answer session, a student said that she was willing to fight against such issues but there was resistance from her parents. “I have made an effort to raise my voice against injustices and also corruption. However, my parents are worried that others may harm me and I may get into problems,” she said. Mr Raju asked her to remain undeterred by such discouragements and move ahead with her conviction.

Mr Kemparaju, an official with Syndicate Bank, said that the bank was a “people first” bank and it focuses on delivering quality services to its customers. Syndicate Bank has 2,300 branches and its annual turnover has reached Rs 225,000 crore, he said. Mr V. M. Ravi, Coordinator, Sri Venkateshwara College, was present.
