Apple invited journalists on Tuesday to a new launch event scheduled for October 22, where the company is expected to unveil a new line of iPads.

The invitation featured what looks like a pattern of multi-coloured leaves, and the tagline “We still have a lot to cover.” The event comes a month after Apple unveiled two new versions of the iPhone 5 in a variety of new colours. The new invitations added to speculation that the new iPads would also feature a range of new colours, possibly in the form of covers for the tablet computers.

Apple is also expected to unveil a new version of its full-sized iPad and a new mini iPad that will likely get a crisper Retina screen.

Apple is under pressure to produce a big hit for the upcoming holiday season as its share of the tablet market continues to fall in the face of improved competition from tablets running Google’s Android operating system.

Apple also said on Tuesday it had appointed Angela Ahrendts, the chief executive of the Burberry Group, to head its retail efforts.

Ahrendts, 53, will join the company next year, to oversee the “strategic direction, expansion and operation” of Apple’s retail and online stores, the company said.
