Celkon Mobiles, the Hyderabad-based mobile phone maker with a 4 per cent market share in the smartphone segment, has entered the Windows Operating System segment by launching the cheapest phone in the country with Microsoft’s OS.
Priced at ₹4,979, the four-inch WIN400 phone works on Windows 8.1 OS and comes with a 1.2 GHz quad core processor with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 200 chipset. The four-inch display phone, however, comes with a 1,500 mAh battery, leaving a concern here.
Qualcomm and Microsoft have said the battery efficiency in Windows OS phones is far better and gives comfortable battery backup.
Microsoft, which has decided to open up its mobile operating system for other manufacturers of late, said that is in the process of strengthening the ecosystem to spread the OS. Asked whether their decision to share the OS with other phone-makers was a bit too late, Rajiv Ahlawat, Director (Mobility) of Microsoft, said they were waiting for a product that could differentiate them (with the competition).
Windows OS is a very distant second to Android that rules the smart phone market globally and in India.
While its internal memory is pegged at 4 GB, the phone allows users to increase the memory to 32 GB.
Addressing a press conference here, Murali Retineni, Executive Director of Celkon Mobiles, said the company was looking at increasing their marketshare to 7-8 per cent in the smartphone market by the end of March 2015.
About 55 lakh smartphones are sold in India every month.
