The advent of a new wave of artificial intelligence and deep learning will take away a lot of jobs. But it can also lead to creativity and spur geniuses, said David Wood, Chair of London Futurists.

Speaking on the theme ‘Predicting 2025: Business and Work Life’, organised by The Blue Circle, a community for industry leaders and entrepreneurs, here on Monday, Wood said that jobs being taken away doesn’t mean that there is no need for humans to exist.

For this to happen, universal basic income should become a norm, where people can get support from the government when they work on creative projects. For instance, JK Rowling was availing child-support income from the government when she worked on the Harry Potter series, which went on to become a huge success.

“As new technologies come in, they will take away the backbreaking work and humans will be able to explore creativity in different fields like art or music,” he said.

Wood said, “It can spur geniuses who can then spur inventions.” But it is not easy and highly challenging. Governments should make this a priority, he added.

Another challenge of technology will be inclusivity. Digitisation and automation will make 20-30 per cent of jobs obsolete over the next 10 years. To ensure inclusion, organisations will have to collaborate with the right partners and community to come up with a solution.

“Organisations will need to navigate current challenges and prepare for game-changing future through agility and foresight. They will need to anticipate, monitor and ride tech trends, human trends and social trends rather than being drowned by them,” said Wood.
