Punjab’s wheat procurement is heading for an all-time record this season as procurement so far has already touched the 104.08 lakh tonne mark as against 101.39 lakh tonne in corresponding period of last year.
“We are still seeing daily wheat arrival of one lakh tonne in the state (Punjab) as against 15,000 tonne of arrival last year at this time... we are expecting that the total lifting in this season may surpass record procurement of 107.36 lakh tonne, which was achieved in 2009-10,” a senior official of Food Corporation of India (FCI) said here today.
The crop buying had already crossed the last year’s procurement of 102.18 lakh tonne.
Punjab has made arrangements to procure 110 lakh tonne of wheat in current season.
Government agencies lifted 99.8 per cent of wheat at 103.83 lakh tonne, while private traders have procured just 24,304 tonnes of wheat.
