Wholesale egg prices that were ruling flat for more than a week, may soon gain with a rise in consumption as the observance of Vinayaka Chaturthi comes to a close in the North.
Egg prices touched a new high of Rs 3.65 a piece on September 20; slipped to Rs 3.55 owing to buyers’ resistance and has been ruling at that level since then.
The National Egg Coordination Committee (NECC), Namakkal Zone, is planning to effect a steady rise in prices of poultry products.
“With the Vinayaka Chaturthi festivities drawing to a close in the North, a major market for our shell and broiler trade, we see a rise in consumption.
Schools in the State are set to reopen soon and we will be able to clear up our piling stocks.
Moreover, considering the soaring input costs and rise in offtake, we plan to raise the prices gradually,” said P. Selvaraj, Chairman, NECC, Namakkal Zone.
Noon meal centres in schools consume around 70 lakh eggs a day.
Meanwhile, NECC has maintained the rates for layer birds at Rs 49/kg price band for the past two weeks.
Palladam-based Broiler Coordination Committee has fixed the prices of live chicken at Rs 63/kg (Rs 64).
Namakkal and Palladam are the benchmark of poultry prices in the country.
