Manipal University is planning to open a research centre to study pure mathematics, according to its Pro Vice-Chancellor.

Inaugurating a workshop on ‘MATLAB’ software recently, he said that mathematics has great role in the development of new technology. “Manipal University is planning to open a research centre to study pure mathematics in the near future,” he said.

He appreciated the efforts of the Department of Mathematics of the Manipal Institute of Technology to have a laboratory-oriented workshop. Such workshops provide platform for researchers and faculty members to exchange views, he said.

Dr Vinod Thomas, director of the Manipal Institute of Technology, said that MATLAB is an important tool for engineers, mathematicians and researchers to understand the geometrical interpretations of practical situations and solve the problems. Many more such workshops and conferences should be conducted in inter-disciplinary subjects, he said.

A press release by Manipal University said here that Dr Sesappa Rai, head of the Department of Mathematics and convener of the workshop, welcomed the gathering. Dr Ciji Pearl Kurian, Professor of Electrical Engineering and organizing secretary of the workshop, briefed about the event, it added.
