How to be successful and be happy is the question that everyone is confronted with in life. Adherence to natural principles and laws is the way to be successful and happy, said S. Vembu, Territory Manager, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL), Tirunelveli.

He was delivering a guest lecture under the Business Line Club of the Department of Management Studies, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli on ‘An insight into Petroleum industry and campus to commerce- few tips”, on Saturday.

The event was sponsored by Tamilnad Mercantile Bank Ltd (TMB), Tuticorin

Giving a sketch about the functioning and performance of the petroleum industry and in particular about BPCL in his lecture with reference to pricing and how it is important to the country, Vembu proceeded to say that one needed to understand Mahatma Gandhi’s reference to seven deadly sins in life, namely, wealth without work, pleasure without conscience, knowledge without character, commerce without morality (ethics), science without humanity, religion without sacrifice and politics without principles. These when allowed a ride would destroy the very fabric of the individual’s life and society, politics and result in the end in failure and unhappiness. One is confronted with issues that go against natural principles and laws in public life at every stage, he added.

Success brings happiness. But one can be happy even in failures, for it is only a state of mind, he said. If one decides to be happy, even in failures one can find happiness by looking at the positive gains from the experience, he added.

He suggested to the outgoing graduates that to be successful they need to think big and act big, listen to both sides, be bold and maintain individuality, be clear about objectives, honour commitment, equip themselves with latest information and gain domain expertise and be ethical in approach. To experience happiness, they need to free the heart from hate, free the mind from worry, lead a simple life, give more to others and expect less from others, he added.

Earlier, P. Sureshkumar, Chief Manager, TMB, Tirunelveli, explained the various schemes of the bank and the scope for employment in the banking sector.

Dr P. Ravi, Head of the Department (in-charge), was present.
