The government should set up more Indian Institute of Plantation Managements (IIPMs) to address the global challenges of agribusiness, said Sunny George Verghese, Group Managing Director & CEO, Olam International, Singapore.
Speaking at the 20th foundation day celebrations at IIPM-Bangalore, Verghese urged the students to be change agents and to seek solutions to important global issues on food security, water security, climate change and energy safety.
Food safety and reducing food wastage across the value chain for improving competiveness of the sector is most crucial.
Verghese also urged the Union Government to set up 10 more IIPMs across the country to face the next level challenge of 4Fs of agriculture, namely, food, feed, fibre and fuel (bio-fuels). He also touched upon the emerging opportunities in global agri-plantation sector and asked IIPM to create adequate human resources to make use of the opportunities.
JS Deepak, Chairman, IIPM, and Additional Secretary at Department of Commerce, presided over the convocation function and conferred the degrees. The institute this year has conferred 94 PGDM-ABPM diplomas.
Earlier, VG Dhanakumar, Director, IIPM, spoke on the institute’s achievements.
The convocation address was delivered by KRS Murthy, former Director, IIM-Bangalore. Murthy emphasised the significance of dynamic thinking and importance of agri-plantation sector in the economic development of the country.
