The existing low-pressure area over South-East Bay of Bengal has intensified a round into a 'well-marked' area this morning, and is on course to become a depression during the course of the day/night.

The system was located in the sea off the Tamil Nadu coast, at least 1,239 km to the south-east of Chennai, an update at 0830 hrs this morning by the US Navy's Joint Typhoon Warning Centre (JTWC) said.

Approaching TN coast

Global models indicate that the system would undergo development over the next two to three days. The JTWC has upgraded to 'medium' the chances of its evolution as a depression during the next 24 hours.

It is expected to thrive on the warm sea surface temperatures, although the upper environment is not that friendly. India Met Department (IMD) too has maintained a similar forecast with respect to the system.

A friendly Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) in the higher levels is what seems to have suddenly triggered the 'low.' If it keeps to the west-northwest track, it should reach the Tamil Nadu coast by Sunday.

Rain alert

Meanwhile, the IMD has warned that fishermen venturing into the sea off the Tamil Nadu coast should exercise caution today and tomorrow in view of the development in the far seas.

Heavy rainfall is likely over Tamil Nadu and Kerala on Thursday. From Friday onwards, the rain warning will be extended to south coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema, too.

Scattered to isolated fairly widespread rainfall is forecast for the extreme South Peninsula from early next week (Monday to Wednesday), while it will be isolated to scattered over the rest of South Peninsular India.
