The State Excise Minister, K. Babu, has stressed the need to tap all available alternative sources of energy to meet the State’s growing power shortage.

He said the proposed move assumes significance in the context of increasing opposition to setting up of new hydel power projects on environmental grounds.

The Minister was speaking as the chief guest at the signing of MoU between the Bangalore-based AOJ Media Pvt Ltd and Kerala Electric Trades Association (KETA) to organise the first-ever “Save Power Show” early next year.

The objective of the show is to popularise wind, solar, tidal and geothermal sources of energy to help tide over Kerala’s growing power shortage and prevent frequent power cuts.

The MoU was signed by Sumesh Wadhera, Managing Director and P.V. Jose, Director, AOJ Media Pvt Ltd, and E.V. George, President, KETA.

Land shortage

Speaking on the occasion, B. Ashok, Director of Industries and Commerce, Kerala, said pressure on land and shortage of power are the major hurdles in the State’s industrial growth. The State must find about 5,000 acres urgently for the manufacturing sector.

A brochure brought out by AOJ Media, to mark the 5th Kerala Gold and Jewellery show - 2012 scheduled to be held at Thrissur from December 1-3, was also released on the occasion.

Presented by the Department of Industries and Commerce, the KGJS-2012 has been planned to coincide with the Grand Kerala Shopping Festival, and is timed to help business take advantage of the shopping boom of Christmas and New Year, as well as the wedding season.
