The Assam Government has reassured its support to industries in acquiring land in the state.

Addressing a meeting here on investment opportunities, State Industries and Commerce Minister Pradyut Bordoloi said Assam would continue to facilitate land acquisition if any company sets up industry there.

“We also extend special support for industries that have been given a mega status. State industrial development corporation helps a mega industry in converting (less productive) agricultural land to an industry one,” Bordoloi said while addressing the seminar organised by MCC Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

According to the minister, Assam Government gives mega status to a company that has created 1000 jobs and invested more than Rs 100 crore.

The State received investments worth around Rs 25,000 crore in the last five years “despite all difficulties”, he added.

Assam Government has developed cluster-based models to boost industrial growth. “We have developed a mega food park, jute park, park for pharmaceutical industry, banana park and other such clusters,” the minister said.

Bordoloi, however, pointed out that unlike other States, Assam would not have bigger chunks of land, since it usually has small land holdings. He further clarified that the State Government is focusing on promoting future industrial activities in other corners apart from Guwahati.

Stating that land is increasingly becoming an issue for industrial development, he said, “Though the land allotment issue has begun from Singur, it is becoming a concern across India. However, unlike West Bengal, our Government has not washed off hands (in helping industries acquire land).”

Expansion

Assam is also planning to add thermal power generation capacity to meet the increasing energy demand in the State.

The minister said talks are on to develop an integrated tea park to add value to Assam tea, which accounts for nearly 55 per cent of the country’s total tea production.
