West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday reiterated the need for strengthening the federal structure in the country.

According to her, attempts are being made to dismantle the federal structure and weaken Parliamentary democracy. This indeed was a matter of concern.

The requirement, she said, was to look into the aspirations of regional parties. Moreover, it must also be kept in mind that each State is different, and as such, aspirations too are different.

“We want a united India… but regional interest must be looked into (too). The Centre is like a parent and the States, its children,” Banerjee said, while speaking at the valedictory session of the platinum jubilee celebrations of the West Bengal Assembly.

Boycott call Emphasising on electoral reforms, Banerjee said that political parties should make themselves more “transparent and accountable”. She simultaneously called to have administrative, judicial and economic reforms.

Meanwhile, Banerjee once again took to task the Opposition – that included the Left Front and the Congress – for boycotting the special session of the Assembly.

According to her, “certain parties” when they are in power try to seek all the benefits and take advantages. But when they are in the Opposition, they “boycott proceedings” of the House.

Criticises Left Categorically, naming the CPI(M)-led Left Front, Banerjee pointed out that the Left parties had boycotted proceedings of the House between 1972 and 1977 (when Congress’ Siddhartha Shankar Roy was the Chief Minister) alleging rigging.

But, her party (the Trinamool Congress), despite getting to know of ample instances of rigging, had never boycotted House proceedings or special sessions during its tenure as the Opposition.

“Events like these (platinum jubilee celebrations) should not be looked at from the point of view of politics, but, courtesy. Political views and moral standpoint need to be different,” she said.
