A government boat carrying the Chief Secretary of Maharashtra, DK Jain and other senior officials and a political activist capsized off the Mumbai coast at 4 pm on Wednesday. The Coast Guard and Navy immediately launched a search and rescue operation.
All the boat occupants were saved, except political activist Siddhesh Pawar, who is still missing.
Jain and the other officials were headed towards a small rocky island near the coast, which has been chosen for the proposed memorial for Chhatrapati Shivaji.
Jain was to participate in the foundation stone laying ceremony at the island, which is also known as Shivaji Smarak.
The Coast Guard received a message at about 4.15 pm that a boat had capsized near Shivaji Smarak. The Shivaji Smarak is about 2.6 km from the business district of Nariman Point. Speed boats and helicopters were immediately pressed into service for the rescue operation.
The stone laying event has been postponed due to the incident.
