West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has been invited to visit Singapore by its Foreign Affairs minister.

According to State Finance, Commerce and Industries Minister, Amit Mitra, the proposal is under the Chief Minister’s consideration.

She will be accompanied by a business delegation that will include various departmental secretaries including city-based businessmen, he said.

Banerjee, sources said, is keen to seek investments into the State.

The date and other details of the trip are yet to be announced.

Meanwhile, authorities of the Singapore-based Changi Airports International met Amit Mitra, apprising him of the progress at the upcoming aerotropolis (airport city) at Andal near Durgapur, some 180 km away from Kolkata. The project is being developed by the Bengal Aerotropolis Projects Ltd (BAPL). Changi has a 26 per cent stake in the project along with four other Indian companies.

According to release issued by BAPL, Teck Koon, Chairman, Changi Airports International met Mitra and presented “a factual overview of the project”. They also discussed “ways in which Changi can bring in fresh investments exploring new business possibilities from Singapore, into its Aerotropolis project in Bengal and thereby participate in the State’s industrial resurgence”.

The airport, according to Mitra, is likely to start operations by the end of this year.
