The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and the ruling BJP on Friday ratcheted up the rhetoric on the construction of the Ram temple in Ayodhya after the Supreme Court said an appropriate Bench constituted by it will pass an order on January 10 for fixing the date of hearing in the Ayodhya case.

‘Creating hurdles’

While the VHP renewed its pitch that a legislation by Parliament is an expeditious way of resolving the dispute, the BJP said the Congress was “blocking” the temple construction.

Union Minister Smriti Irani, who was on a day’s visit to Congress President Rahul Gandhi’s constituency Amethi, blamed the Congress on Friday for “creating hurdles” in the judicial process and said ‘ Ram bhakts ’ should ask the party about it.

“Congress should not play politics through its lawyers on Ram temple issue, which is a matter of faith. Its leaders, as lawyers, are creating hurdles in the court. People and ‘ Ram bhakts’ should ask the party whether its leader wore ‘ janeu ’ only for polls in the three States,” she said. Her reference was to senior Congress leader and lawyer Kapil Sibal, who had sought deferral of hearing on the matter until the 2019 general election are conducted.

The VHP, on its part, reiterated that a legislation should be brought to facilitate the construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya. VHP working President Alok Kumar asked the Centre to bring a legislation before the end of its term. He said it would have been better if the Bench for hearing the Ram Janmabhoomi appeals had been constituted before the last hearing, which was held on October 29, 2018.

“It is to be how the new Bench will respond to the matter, particularly about the request for a day-to-day hearing and early disposal of the appeals,” Kumar said.

“The VHP urges the Centre to bring in the legislation within its term,” he said.

Earlier on Friday, the matter was disposed within 30 seconds by a Bench comprising Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice SK Kaul.

Three-member Bench

Now, a three-member Bench will be set up for taking forward the Ayodhya land dispute case, in which 14 appeals were filed against the 2010 Allahabad High Court judgment, delivered in four civil suits, that the 2.77-acre land be partitioned equally among the three parties — the Sunni Waqf Board, the Nirmohi Akhara and Ram Lalla.
