After seeing off a depression from its own basin to the safe confines over land, the Bay of Bengal is left watching the North-West Pacific where a super typhoon is holding sway over regional weather.

The 'pull' effect of Super Typhoon 'Lan' is clear from the manner in which flows from South Arabian Sea, South Bay of Bengal and South China Sea are getting directed towards the North-West Pacific.

Super typhoon 'Lan'

'Lan' was seen this morning lording it over the North-West Pacific at a location north-east of the Philippines and east of Taiwan while preparing to move towards South Japan over next two days.

A tropical depression to the south-east of Mariana Islands in Central Pacific falls under the massive shadow of its illustrious peer and may not be allowed to intensify beyond a point.

Meanwhile, the landfall over South Japan is expected to weaken 'Lan,' following which the flows far downstream in the Bay of Bengal would get some breathing space to organise themselves.

This could help with the onset of the North-East monsoon over the Indian South Peninsula, delayed by a week by a home-spun depression and the super typhoon- depression combo in the Pacific.

This morning, the Bay depression was found ensconced firmly over land. It is expected to weaken by tomorrow, and throw down a helpful trough in the Bay to receive the North-East monsoon.

Rain for interior TN

A familiar weather tracker of the US Climate Prediction Centre has projected movement of weather systems to establish the North-East monsoon over the Bay during a 12-day period until November 2.

Rain-heads carried by rudimentary circulations or the odd 'easterly wave' are shown impacting mainly the central and southern parts of Tamil Nadu, though not in a spectacular fashion.

The pattern is forecast to be broken later, with a stronger weather system (low-pressure area or a likely depression) steering north from Central Bay and looking at the Odisha/Bengal coasts, yet again.

This is forecast to occur during the period from November 2 to November 6, which, however, needs to be re-confirmed with real-time scenario unfolding over sea and land as on date.

Any major weather system taking shape in the Bay during this stage of the North-East monsoon could bring about a hiatus in the rainfall over the South Peninsula.
