After a student of a law college in Kolkata was allegedly gang raped inside the institution, police arrested three accused in this case.

This alleged gang-rape of the law student has triggered a fresh political firestorm after the rape and murder of a junior doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar hospital in August last year.

On Friday, all the three accused were produced in court which remanded them in police custody for four days. The process of the victim’s submission of a confidential statement before a judicial magistrate was also underway, police said.

The survivor of the alleged sexual assault has alleged in her complaint that the crime was committed inside the college premises on Wednesday.

The prime accused in the incident is a former student of the college and a practising criminal lawyer at the Alipore Police and Sessions Court in the city. According to the college authorities, the main accused was also engaged as a temporary non-teaching staff at the institution for a renewable contractual period of 45 days.

The police, in a post on X, said an FIR was registered without delay, and within 12 hours, all three accused named in the complaint were apprehended. “They have been remanded to police custody till July 1. The investigation is being pursued with utmost seriousness, professionalism, and sensitivity,” the police said.

The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo motu cognisance of the alleged gang-rape of the law student and asked the Kolkata Police to file a detailed report within three days.

NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar on Friday wrote to Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma directing him to initiate an immediate and time-bound investigation. Rahatkar also directed Verma to ensure that the accused were booked under relevant sections of the BNS and the victim was given full medical, psychological and legal assistance.

Union minister and BJP’s West Bengal unit president Sukanta Majumdar claimed that the alleged gang rape showed that female students are “not safe” in educational institutes in the state. Condemning the incident, the ruling Trinamool Congress said the police swiftly apprehended all three accused in the case and urged the opposition party not to politicise the issue.
