The stakeholders in tourism sector have welcomed the Karnataka Government’s proposal to develop tourism along beaches and islands.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who presented the Budget for 2014-15 on Friday, said the government had sought relaxation of Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) guidelines to tap the tourist potential in the coastal areas of Karnataka by developing 42 beaches and four islands.
During a recent visit to Mangalore, Karnataka Tourism Minister R.V. Deshpande had stated that the government has already written to the Union Environment Ministry, seeking relaxation in CRZ norms.
Vatika Kamath, Chairperson of the Tourism Sub-Committee of Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said that the Chamber had been seeking relaxation in CRZ norms for quite sometime.
The neighbouring States such as Kerala and Goa are doing well in coastal tourism because of the relaxation in CRZ norms.
If the Centre allows relaxation in CRZ norms and the State Government implements the decision to develop beaches and islands, it would lead to a good growth in tourism sector along coastal Karnataka.
Welcoming the proposal, Yatish Baikampady, Chief Executive Officer of Panambur Beach Tourism Development Project, said that the proposed move would open up closed doors for tourism along the Karnataka coast.
The CRZ norms do not allow permanent structures along the coastline. However, some eco-friendly materials should be used for the temporary structures to match with the ambience. Till now there was no permission for that. It will definitely give boost to tourism in this part, he said.
