The passing of Judges Appointment Bill in Parliament by voice vote is a feather on the cap of the ruling NDA. The Congress, which tried delaying tactics for long, was not able to do it any further as it was the party that had initiated the current move. Hence, its suggestion for a small amendment was agreed to by the NDA.

As such, the Congress had to fall in line and could not prevent BJP from getting credit for this important Bill. The Government, through the Law Minister, promised that Judiciary’s independence will not be disturbed. Let us see how things evolve when the Bill comes into play in future.

India shining

It’s heartening to see that two people of Indian origin — Manjul Bhargava and Subhash Khot — are among the recipients of the coveted International Mathematical Union awards.

This will give a huge impetus to our youth to do research in sciences. But we have to remember that India has to go a long way in making our higher educational institutions centres of excellence and alma mater for Nobel laureates.

The Government should increase the allocation for the science and technology sector in order to achieve this goal. Otherwise, the brain drain of bright students for research to foreign countries will continue unabated.

Change lifestyle

This refers to “The bottomline is health” by Dinesh C Sharma. We should be teaching our children yoga and working persons should do breathing exercises daily for just 15 minutes to stay away from all these lifestyle diseases. The managements of our businesses should teach their workers such practices and help their fellow workers stay fit, which will in turn enhance productivityand profits.

Ensure inner party democracy

This refers to the report “AAP leaders in conflict again” (August 14). The problem with AAP seems to be endemic and perennial with even its founder-members expressing unhappiness over the style of functioning of certain people who matter the most in the party, and some of them quitting.

Differences of opinion are more often than not coming to the fore, which is certainly not in the larger interest of the party that wants to emerge as a force to reckon with in the national scene.

To sustain, if not to grow, in the vortex of politics, the party has to take everybody along, take their opinion and ensure inner-party democracy lest it withers out and eclipses from the political scene sooner than later.

AAP leaders need to grow up, and the party has to learn the nuances of politics to entrench itself in the political arena. They should desist from hurling baseless allegations against rivals bereft of supporting documents.

Water ways

This is with reference to “A Look East energy policy” by G Parthasarathy. For a long time, decision has not been taken on hydel projects in Arunachal Pradesh.

Myanmar is also giving us opportunities to us and we should make best use of them. Irrawaddy, which caught the fancy of writers such as Fred Pearce, is the least tapped among the rivers in South East Asia for hydroelectric projects. For all these years, Myanmar was closed and now it has begun to open up and the opportunities it gives should be seized. The openings given by Sri Lanka also need to be grabbed eagerly and these will give both the nations a lot of benefits.

Comic relief

This is with reference to “Desperately seeking laughter” by Gopinath Menon (August 13). I completely agree with the author.

We are laughing at someone else’s expense. And the other person is being degraded so badly for us to laugh. In fact, I have stopped watching the programme in question. And I am extremely happy that it is being taken off air.
