Nearly 87 per cent television households have been digitised in Kolkata, Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai, according to latest estimates by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. The estimates include direct-to-home (DTH) subscribers.
“The progress review shows that Mumbai has already achieved nearly 100 per cent digitisation. In other three cities, Kolkata has achieved 78 per cent digitisation in cable alone; with DTH the percentage of digitisation in Kolkata has gone up to 81 per cent. In Delhi, digitisation percentage of cable TV is 74 per cent and with DTH it has gone up to 81 per cent. Chennai is showing 60 per cent digitisation and with DTH it comes to 85 per cent,” the Ministry said in a statement.
While DTH operators have informed the Ministry that 27 lakh of their set-top boxes have been installed in the four metro cities, Multi System Operators are installing 45,000 boxes a day in the run-up to digitisation’s first phase deadline on October 31. The Ministry said it had stepped up on creating consumer awareness through all forms of media, besides sending text messages.
