Crompton Greaves, which makes products ranging from electrical appliances to transformers, plans to open a facility in Grenoble, France, to produce, test and calibrate over two million ZIV smart meters annually.

In 2012, Crompton Greaves acquired ZIV, a global company that provides smart-grid and automation solutions for industrial and utility companies, for about €150 million.

The company said it chose Grenoble to cover the demand for Linky meters in France and also provide local support to ERDF, France’s primary electricity distribution utility.

ERDF manages 95 per cent of the country’s network. Linky is a communicating meter that can receive and send data and in constant interaction with the network.

The company declined to provide details on its investment in the facility.

Crompton Greaves recently won an order from ERDF to participate in the supply of three million Linky smart meters in the first phase of its 35 million unit rollout plan for 2021.

The proposed facility will produce the first unit by the second quarter of 2015, Crompton Greaves said.
