After winning the global broadcast rights for the Indian Premier League (IPL), Nimbus Communications is keeping options open on whether to sublicense the rights or launch Neo Sports in new geographies for spreading the reach of the IPL.
Nimbus Communications' Chief Operating Officer, Mr Yannick Colaco, told Business Line , “What we are doing is a two-pronged approach. The focus is to make the IPL a global sports brand. In some territories, if it makes business sense, we may launch NEO Sports but overall, our focus is to expand the reach of IPL so we will also look to sublicense the rights in Europe where there is a passionate sports following.”
The BCCI on Sunday announced that the media rights tender for IPL's global Internet, mobile and radio rights, along with television rights in certain television territories have been awarded to a consortium led by Times Internet Ltd for Rs 261.6 crore for four years till 2014.
Nimbus Communications won the global broadcast rights. However, countries in the Indian Sub-Continent, South Africa, Australia, the West Asia, the Caribbean, Hong Kong and Singapore are excluded from the rights. Mr Colaco added that the company's focus markets for the IPL would be the US, Malaysia and Europe which could contribute a lot to the revenue.
