The volume offered for the auction of Coonoor Tea Trade Association has fallen again this week. For Sale No: 34 ending Friday, a volume of 17.74 lakh kg has been catalogued. This is as much as 3.32 lakh kg lower than last week’s offer.

Of this, a volume of 12.87 lakh kg belongs to the leaf grades and 4.87 lakh kg belongs to the dust grades. As much as 16.84 lakh kg belongs to the CTC variety and only 90,000 kg to orthodox. The proportion of orthodox teas continues to be low in leaf and dust grades. In the leaf counter, only 41,000 kg belongs to orthodox, while 12.46 lakh kg CTC. Among the dusts, only 49,000 kg belongs to orthodox while 4.38 lakh kg, CTC.

With substantial volumes remaining unsold in previous auctions, as much as 3.32 lakh kg of such teas are being re-offered this week.

In the leaf auction last week, Hindustan Unilever Ltd, among corporate buyers, bought brighter liquoring varieties. Tata Global Beverages Ltd, was fairly active on good medium sorts. Duncans Tea Ltd operated on the good medium bolder brokens. In the dust auction, HUL, was fairly active on good medium varieties and orthodox dusts. Tata Global and Duncans Tea did not operate. Godfrey Philips Indian bought medium sorts. Indcoserve expressed interest for good medium smaller grades. There was good demand for brighter liquoring teas from upcountry buyers. Overall, internal buyers were less active. Exporters chose mostly plainer grades.
