Substantial growth in movement of coal has helped Eastern Railways clock nearly 15 per cent growth in freight traffic between April and August, to 25.11 million tonnes (mt). It loaded nearly 22 mt of freight during the same period last year.
According to a release, of the total freight loaded, coal amounted to 17.24 mt as against nearly 14 mt in the corresponding period last year, up by about 23 per cent.
The Eastern Railways also surpassed its target of carrying 24.37 mt of freight, the release added.
Earnings
It reported a 30 per cent increase in earnings from freight traffic, to Rs 1,812.36 crore during these five months. It had earned nearly Rs 1,390 crore in the year-ago period.
