Southern Railway has installed additional point of sale (PoS) machines in 22 of its passenger reservation centres across Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
These 22 centres that have the highest number of passenger reservation system (PRS) transactions now offer the facility of cashless payment while purchasing reservation tickets.
Within a week of installation of PoS machines, the cashless PRS transactions increased to 4.6 per cent from 0.5 per cent, says a SR press release.
The railway plans to provide PoS machines at all reservation offices in a phased manner.
Southern Railway also provides the facility to book suburban season tickets through PoS machines. All 70 suburban stations of Southern Railway have been provided with PoS machines.
Within three days of installation of PoS machines, 6.2 per cent of season ticket passengers have switched to cashless transactions.
The Ministry of Railways has announced that with effect from January 1, 2017, a discount of 0.5 per cent will be extended for season tickets purchased through PoS machines, the release said.
