There is a need to set up enough construction and demolition (C&D) waste processing plants in the country, according to an expert.

Delivering a lecture on ‘rules and regulation for C&D waste management’ at a workshop organised by the Dakshina Kannada district administration in Mangaluru on Tuesday, Vimal Kumar, Secretary General of Centre for Fly Ash Research and Management, New Delhi, said the country produces approximately 150 million tonnes of C&D wastes every year, though there is no scientific data on this.

Germany, which produces around 59 million tonnes of C&D wastes a year, has around 270 C&D waste processing plants. Other developed countries also have more number of such plants.

Stating that India has only a few processing plants as of now, he stressed the need to have more such units.

In spite of C&D Management Rules 2016 in place, many cities are yet to adopt the rules and set up processing plants in their jurisdiction. C&D wastes are produced by every one, including individuals to government agencies, and they are all covered under the C&D Management Rules, he said.

The proper management of C&D wastes will help reduce the impact on environment and can provide business opportunities.
