A plea has been made to replace English signboards in city buses plying in Cuttack, Bhubaneswar and Puri.

Odisha Central Revenue Divisional Commissioner Aravinda Padhee has requested the transport department to ensure that the company, which runs the city bus service in the three cities, changes the language of digital signboards and all other information of public importance into Odia immediately.

The RDC has also made a similar request to the Cuttack city DCP to ensure that the digital signboard at the traffic tower in Madhupatna Square also uses Odia language to provide vital information of public importance.

Observing that many police stations in the city have their signboards written only in English language, the RDC has asked the DCP to look into it saying that many people coming from rural areas are not able to locate the police stations for necessary assistance.

It may be recalled that cultural organisation ‘Utkal Sammilani’ had earlier made similar observations and had requested the RDC to act upon it as soon as possible.

Expressing concern over the rampant use of a foreign language in signboards and bill boards disseminating vital information of public interest, it had approached the authorities several times to check it.
