The Telangana Government will come out with an exclusive policy for the welfare of platform-based gig workers. The government will also establish a Welfare Board for their welfare, according to Shaik Salauddin, Founder and National General Secretary of the Telangana Gig and Platform Workers’ Union (TGPWU).
“Telangana Minister for Labour & Employment Vivek Venkataswamy participated in a stakeholder consultation meeting on Friday and made these announcements,” he said.
The union wants the government to ensure a guaranteed minimum wage for all gig workers, including drivers, delivery partners, and home-service workers who offer their services through various tech-based platforms.
“The Government must mandate registration of gig and platform workers to ensure they are covered under all welfare provisions. It must also make the service providers ensure algorithmic transparency from platform companies to ensure fairness in task allocation, payments, and account deactivations,” he said in a statement.
The union also wanted the government to set up a tripartite board with representation from workers, platforms, and the government to discuss and solve problems.
