The Maharashtra Government has decided to double the amount of compensation provided to the farmers and landholders, whose lands will get acquired for power transmission projects with capacities ranging from 66 kV to 1,200 kV.

In view of rising opposition from land lords for such transmission projects, the State Cabinet on Monday decided to enhance the compensation.

However, the new scheme will not be applicable to areas falling under Mumbai municipality, due to exorbitantly high land rates. For Mumbai , a new committee would be set up.

A press statement issued by the Chief Minister’s Office said that the value of the land where such projects come up gets affected by the depreciated rates , therefore the landlords have been opposing such projects,

Under the new scheme, they will get compensation up to 85 per cent of the value of the land on which the power transmission tower would be installed. Moreover for the land under, which the power lines would be laid will get up to 15 per cent of the compensation, the statement said.

The new scheme would be applicable to all power companies, setting up such projects in the State. As on date, the Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission Company, which is owned by the State Government is implementing 82 such projects in the State.

Currently, the power companies depending on the quality of land, compensate the landholders about 25 per cent to 65 per cent of the ready reckoner rate. The collector provides compensation for the crops and trees affected by the power project.
