‘Misgovernance is often due to lack of training’ of company directors, said M.S. Sundara Rajan, former Chairman, Indian Bank.

Ambiguity in the role of independent directors and poor clarity regarding their responsibilities has led to ‘board rooms in companies not being vibrant,’ he said. Over 40,000 directors are needed in the country but there is no proper training infrastructure. The Institute of Directors, an apex association of company directors has taken on this role of training.

With its headquarters in Delhi, it has branches in Mumbai, Bangalore and Kochi and is expanding its presence to Chennai with a Tamil Nadu Chapter to be launched on March 29.

Sundara Rajan who will be chairman of the Tamil Nadu Chapter, said the institute will organise workshops, lectures and training sessions on a range of subjects, he said.
