The government will also make it legally binding for a power distribution company to supply 24x7 uninterrupted power supply.

RK Singh, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Power and Renewable Energy, said, “There can be no justification to pass on the burden of our inefficiency to the consumer and this shall not be allowed post March 2019. It is for the power utilities to devise strategy to reduce their losses, the consumer must not be burdened with high power tariffs irrationally.”

Singh said that the Centre will set a cap on the losses that power distribution companies can pass-through on tariffs.

He said, “The States have arrived at consensus-based roadmap to bring down losses in discoms to below 15 per cent by then and any gratuitous load shedding by them after that deadline would attract penalties.”

He further said that inefficiency in billing and non-metering are adversely affecting the power sector.

He said that there is a need to modernise metering system to cut power losses.
