Lakshmi’s NTR, a biopic of actor-politician N T Rama Rao, made by Ram Gopal Verma hit the screens on Friday across the country and abroad, barring Andhra Pradesh
The film seems to have been copied within hours and uploaded on movie sharing websites, downloaded on phones and shredded into clips to be shared over social media sites by the political opponents of Telugu Desam Party and NTR fans. The posts are going viral too.
Lakshmi’s NTR is the second biopic of NTR, founder of TDP and Chief Minister of United Andhra Pradesh to be released in a span of three months. The first, made in two parts (Kathanayakudu and Mahanayakudu), was produced by NTR’s son Balakrishna. It, however, didn’t do very well at the box office.
The second biopic triggered controversy and generated a huge interest ever since its director Ram Gopal Varma announced his intentions to capture the events that led to the ouster of NTR in 1995. Chandrababu Naidu’s role in the developments known as the August crisis didn’t go well with the followers of NTR.
The TDP is worried about its negative impact as it is facing a crucial poll on April 11. Its leaders moved the courts seeking postponement of the release of the film till the polling is over. While the Telangana High Court refused to intervene, the Andhra Pradesh High Court stayed its release till April 3, when it wants to watch it before taking a final decision.
It remains to be seen whether the producer and director of the film will complain against the pirated versions.
