Laying a track for a bullet train can cost 8-20 times more than that of a normal train track, according to data shared by Railways in Parliament.
The cost of laying a bullet train track/kilometre is approximately ₹80-120 crore, compared to ₹10-12 crore for an ordinary track and ₹150-200 crore for metro tracks.
This information was given by the Minister of State for Railways, Manoj Sinha, in a written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha on Friday. The Mumbai-Ahmedabad sector has been identified as the first corridor to start high-speed trains.
The High-Speed Rail Project will have to be taken up through an appropriate mix of Government support, multilateral/bilateral funding by alternative means of resource mobilisation, including Public-Private-Partnership (PPP).
Rail networkIn the Railway Budget, the Government plans to have a Diamond Quadrilateral network of High-Speed Rail connecting the major metros and the growth centres of the country.
