The government plans to start bidding for the next round of expressways soon.

This time around, concrete pavers – expensive equipment that help speed up highway construction – will be used by road developers.

“The bidding for the Mumbai-Vadodara expressway will start within three months,” Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari told BusinessLine, while undertaking an aerial survey of the Eastern Peripheral Expressway.

Companies using pavers in the Eastern Peripheral Expressway, include Sadbhav Engineering, Ashoka Buildcon, Oriental Structural Engineers and Gayatri Projects. Pavers were also used in the Agra-Lucknow and Taj-Yamuna Expressway projects earlier, according to AECOM, an engineering consulting firm.

AS Notta, Team Leader, Eastern Peripheral Expressway, AECOM, which is the consultant for three stretches of this expressway, said concrete pavers, each of which cost about ₹19 crore, have been imported from Germany.

Sanjay Londhe, Wholetime Director, Ashoka Buildcon, told BusinessLine that they are going to use concrete pavers for the next round of expressways.

The company is implementing a stretch of the Eastern Peripheral Expressway, which is 58 per cent complete, and is likely to bid for the next round of expressways.

Gadkari earlier gave details of the next round expressways, which include the Delhi-Meerut Expressway on which construction is going on. The Delhi-Jaipur road alignment is finalised, he said, adding that land acquisition will start soon.

The Delhi-Amritsar-Katra-Haryana-Srinagar highway will also be finalised soon. Others on the anvil are the Bengaluru-Chennai, Hyderabad-Nagpur,Vijayawada-Amrawati, and Kanpur-Lucknow expressways.
